Reducing the Impact on Water
- Kerosene Merox Project (Completed in October 2001): The
most significant pollution reduction was accomplished through
the implementation of the Merox process in which sulphur
compounds are converted to disulphides, eliminating discharges
of Lead Sulphide (PbS) to the effluent system. Cost:
Million US$ 29
- VBU PbS Treating (Completed in 2003): Through innovative
thinking another PbS plant has now ceased to operate and
a process alternative has been implemented to remove the
sulphur of the Visbroken Naphtha by treating it at the existing
Unfiner/Platformer Plant.
- Unleaded Gasoline Project (Completed in July 2000): It
has eliminated the use of Tetraethyl Lead (TEL) and consequently
removed the contamination by organic lead of tank water
bottoms, and hence refinery effluent system. The project
also eliminated the lead emissions to the environment in
line with global leaded gasoline phase out, and eventually
Bahrain was declared as unleaded in September 2000. Cost:

- Rerouting of Sitra Tank Farm Wastewater (Completed in
2002): This project enabled the transfer of waste water
streams resulted from Sitra Tanks Farm operations back to
the main Refinery effluent treatment system, which allowed
better treatment of wastewater. Cost: Million US$ 1.6
A similar project to pipe in the effluent from Marketing
Terminal to Sitra Tanks was developed and completed in August
2003. Cost: US$ 150,000
- Refinery Biological Wastewater Treatment (Active Project):
A project underway to identify opportunities for wastewater
minimization and for the design of a new tertiary treatment
facility the purpose of which is to reduce the dissolved
solid pollutants like sulphide, phenol and ammonical nitrogen
in order to meet the relevant national environmental legislations.
- Sewage Treatment Plant (Active Project): A sewage treatment
facility at the Refinery is currently being progressed to
ensure compliance with the relevant national regulations.
