Convention on the High Seas

Objectives:

To codify the rules of international law relating to the high seas.

Summary of Provisions:

All states should draw up laws to prevent pollution of seas by oil from ships and pipelines or pollution resulting from the exploration and exploitation of the sea bed [art. 24}

All states should take measures in preventing pollution of the sea by dumping of radioactive wastes and also cooperating with international agencies to prevent pollution of the seas and the atmosphere above them from radioactive materials and other pollutants. [art.25]

Membership :

Open to all states of United Nations and any specialized agencies and any state invited by the General Assembly of United Nation to become a party of the Convention.
