Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar)

Objectives:

  • To decrease the progressive loss of wetlands
  • To recognize the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific and recreational values.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To designate at least one national wetland for inclusion in a List of Wetlands of International Importance
  • To consider the international responsibilities for conservation, management and wise use of migratory stocks of wildfowl
  • To establish wetland nature reserves
    Conferences on the conservation of wetlands and water-fowl to be convened as the need arises
