Convention Concerning Protection against Hazards of Poisoning arising from Benzene

Objectives:
To protect workers from hazards arising from the production, handling or use of the aromatic hydrocarbon benzene.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To provide adequate means of personal protection to workers who may be exposed to this harmful product.
  • To use harmless or less harmful substitute products instead of benzene or products containing benzene, whenever such substitution is possible.
  • To prevent the escape of benzene vapour into the air of places of employment.
  • The concentration of benzene not to exceed 25 parts per million.
  • The duration of exposure to benzene or its products to be limited as far as possible.
