Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident

Objectives:
To provide relevant information about nuclear accidents as early as possible in order that transboundary radiological consequences can be minimized.

Summary of Provisions:

  • In the event of a nuclear accident, the Party must notify, directly or through the International Atomic Energy Agency (referred to as Agency), those states which are or may be physically affected and the Agency of the nuclear accident, its nature, time of occurrence and the exact location.
  • In the event of a nuclear accident, the Party must provide the states, which are or may be physically affected and the Agency, directly or through the Agency, with available information relevant to minimizing the radiological consequences.
  • In the event of nuclear accidents other than those specified, the Party must notify with a view to minimizing the radiological consequences.
  • The Agency to inform Parties, member States, other States which are or may be physically affected and international organizations of a notification received.
  • The Agency to provide with the information received to any Party, member States or relevant international organizations, upon request.
