International Convention on Salvage
Objectives:
To provide for uniform international rules regarding salvage
operations in the light of the need for timely operations
and to protect the environment.
Summary of Provisions:
- It provides mainly for salvage of commercial vessels in
navigable waters.
- It provides for the rights and duties of a salvor and
the contents of contracts of salvage.
- The Coastal State to take measures in accordance with
international law to protect its coastline from pollution
or threat of pollution from a casualty or acts that may
lead to harmful consequences.
- The State to give directions in relation to salvage operations,
taking into account the need to ensure its success, in order
to save life or property, preventing damage to the environment
in general.
