Amendment to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil, 1954, Concerning Tank arrangements and Limitation of Tank size

Objectives:

To regulate tank arrangements and limit tank size in oil tankers in order to avoid the possibility of serious environmental pollution resulting from a single accident involving a tanker.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To apply to all tankers scheduled for delivery after 1 January 1977, or for which a contract was placed after 1 January 1972.
  • Tankers built to these specifications to carry a government authorized certificate attesting such compliance.
  • A detailed specification for tank arrangements and size (Annex C) added to the Convention.
