Regional:
Regional Convention of the Conservation of the Red Sea and
the Gulf of Aden Environment
Objectives:
To ensure rational human use of living and non-living marine
and coastal resources in a manner ensuring optimum benefit
for the present generation, at the same time maintaining the
potential of that environment to satisfy the needs and aspirations
of future generations.
Summary of Provisions:
- To cooperate in the formulation of Protocols to implement
the Convention, establish national standards, laws and regulations,
endeavour to harmonize their national policies and cooperate
with the competent, regional and subregional organizations
to establish and adopt regional standards and recommended
practices and procedures.
- To prevent, abate and combat pollution caused by dumping
from ships and aircraft, from land-based sources, from exploration
and exploitation of the bed of the territorial sea, the
continental shelf and the subsoil thereof and from other
human activities.
- To cooperate in dealing with pollution emergencies in
the field of science and technology and in the formulation
and adoption of rules regarding civil liability and compensation
for pollution damage.
- A Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Red
Sea and Gulf of Aden Environment established which consist
of the following organs: A Council comprised of a representative
of each contracting party, A General Secretariat and A Committee
for Settlement of Disputes.
