African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources

Objectives:
To encourage individual and joint action for the conservation, utilization and development of soil, water, flora and fauna for the present and future welfare of mankind, from an economic, nutritional, scientific, educational, cultural and aesthetic point of view.

Summary of Provisions:
Conservation, utilization and development of soil, water, flora and faunal resources in accordance with scientific principles.

  • To conserve and improve the soil and to control erosion and land use.
  • To conserve, utilize and develop water resources, prevent pollution and control water use.
  • To protect flora and ensure its best utilization, the management of forests and control of burning, land clearance and overgrazing.
  • To conserve faunal resources and use them wisely, manage populations and habitats, control hunting, capture and fishing, and prohibit the use of poisons, explosives and automatic weapons in hunting.
  • Full total protection of species in list A while those in list B to be taken only with authorization.
  • To prevent trade in illegally killed and obtained trophies.
