Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution

Objectives:
To achieve International Cooperation for a coordinated and comprehensive approach to the protection and enhancement of the marine environment in the Mediterranean Sea.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To prevent and abate pollution of the Mediterranean caused by dumping from ships and aircraft, by discharges from ships, or that resulting from exploration and exploitation of the seabed and subsoil, by discharges from rivers, coastal establishments or other land-based sources within the territories.
  • To take measures to deal with pollution emergencies, whatever their cause.
  • To establish programmes for monitoring pollution in the area.
  • To cooperate in scientific and technical research relating to all types of marine pollution.
  • To establish procedures for the determination of liability and compensation for damage resulting from violations of the Convention and Protocols.
  • To adopt Protocols for the Prevention of Pollution by dumping from ships and aircraft, and for Cooperation in dealing with pollution emergencies.
  • UNEP designated to discharge secretariat functions under the Convention.
