Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution from Land-Based Sources

Objectives:
To prevent, abate, combat and control pollution of the Mediterranean Sea area by discharges from rivers, coastal establishments or outfalls, or emanating from any other land-based sources within their territories.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To establish programmes and measures, particularly including emission standards and standards for using and discharging substances listed in annexes I and II or wastes containing such substances.
  • To carry out activities to assess the levels of pollution along their coasts and to evaluate the effects of measures taken under the Protocol.
  • To cooperate as far as possible in scientific and technological fields as well as in the cases of conflicts.
  • To convene ordinary and extraordinary meetings to review the implementation of the Protocol, consider the efficacy of the measures adopted and the advisability of any other measures.
