Protocol Concerning Mediterranean Specially Protected Areas

Objectives:
To protect and improve the state of the natural resources and natural sites of the Mediterranean Sea.

Summary of Provisions:

  • To establish, maintain and restore protected areas including buffer areas in which activities are less severely restricted.
  • To prohibit dumping or discharge of wastes and to regulate any act likely to harm or disturb the fauna or flora. Regulation of trade in and import and export of animals which originate in protected areas.
  • To give appropriate publicity to the establishment and significance of the protected areas.
  • To establish and develop scientific and technical research on protected areas and their ecosystems and archeological heritage.
  • To cooperate in establishing and managing protected areas.
  • To convene ordinary and extraordinary meetings to review the implementation of the Protocol and the efficacy of the measures adopted.
