Environmental Events and Achievements in 2003

The year 2003 was another year of dedicated work and a number of events and achievements.

  • The tree donation campaign was continued again this year and employees donated trees whole-heartedly in this campaign. About 350 trees were donated in 2003.



  • The Environment Management System is followed all over the complex and audited internally on a regular basis. Two assessments were done by external auditors from Lloyds and they were successfully completed with minor observations and the recommendations are being followed up.

  • The National Environment Day was celebrated on 8 February with full zeal. Dr. Ismail Al-Madani, Secretary General to Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wild Life, was present on the occasion.

  • Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Week was celebrated from 21st to 24th December 2003. The Oil Minister and GPIC Chairman, Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, PIC Chairman Mr. Saad Al Shuwaib and RoSPA President Lord Faulkner of Worcester were present on the final day to present the various awards during the ceremony.

  • As a part of company’s policy to promote environmental care, GPIC participated in a number of environmental conferences all over the world.

  • A presentation on environmental topics was made by GPIC in Japan and Bahrain.

  • The General Manager Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed will present a paper to Arab Parliamentarians.

  • As a part of GPIC’s various social activities, a team of delegates from Sitra village visited GPIC. They were briefed about the efforts taken by GPIC to promote environmental care.

  • During May 2003, a 20-member students’ delegation visited GPIC complex as a part of educational visits to study the complex and GPIC’s environmental schemes.

  • In the month of May 2003, the General Manager Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed visited Kanoo School and encouraged students on story writing on Safety and Environmental topics.

  • In an effort to enhance the Bird Sanctuary, GPIC planted 2,000 saplings of mangrove trees. This has helped in making the surroundings more favourable for the birds.


  • In June 2003, the General Manager Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed was appointed the Board Member in the General Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wild Life.

  • Board members of the General Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wild Life visited GPIC in July 2003.

  • First ever hatching of Western reef Heron was recorded on the island in GPIC. This shows that the continuous efforts taken on development of bird sanctuary are bearing fruits.

  • Four environmental lectures were arranged in GPIC. Two of them were delivered by outside speakers and two speakers were from GPIC.

  • The ESC Chairman presented a book entitled “Gardens and Gardening in Bahrain” to the General Manager and all managers.

  • In October 2003, the General Manager was appointed as Chairman of Shura Council Environment Committee.

  • As a part of various Environmental Schemes and Projects, the ‘Herbal Garden’ area development was started.

  • In November 2003, the General Manager gave a donation of BD1,000/- to the Marine Life Protection Society.

  • As recognition of the efforts taken at GPIC, the Board of Directors gave directives to finalise the Marine Sanctuary.

  • As a part of Environmental Care promotional Schemes, about 100 aluminium can recycle bins are being given to schools.

  • The dustbins in the Al Areen Park were replaced with more durable and long lasting fibreglass bins.

  • Lectures on environmental topics were given to about 20 schools and more than 1500 students attended the same.

  • GPIC will promote 100 fish farms in Bahrain sponsored by various companies.
