Environmental Events and Achievements
in 2004.
- The National Environment Day was celebrated on 8th February
with full zeal. GPIC’s commitment to protect environment
was praised by Dr. Ismail Al Madani, Secretary General to
Public Commission for the protection of Environment, Wild
life and Marine resources in a visit to GPIC on the National
Environment Day.
- Representatives from GPIC attended Fourth Specialty Conference
on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum and Petrochemical
Industries held in Bahrain from 23rd to 25th February. GPIC
presented paper on ‘Integrated Safety, Health and
Environment approach in GPIC.’
- GPIC won the prestigious Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al
Khalifa Award for Best Environmental Garden in Companies
and Industries.
- Members of the Capital Governorate’s Environment
Committee visited GPIC in March 2004 and praised companies
plans and programs for Environment protection.
- Students from Sitra Primary School visited GPIC in March
and acknowledged company’s efforts to protect environment.
- 50 Number of can recycling bins were procured for distribution
to various schools in Bahrain.
- Breeding of Alma lard flying duck was successful for
the first time on the island in GPIC’s bird sanctuary
in April –2004.
- Labour and Social affairs Minister, Dr. Majeed AlAlawi
visited GPIC. He praised various activities in GPIC, including
Fish farm and Bird sanctuary, which promote the Environmental
care.
- The General Manager attended the Middle East conference
on Sulphur organized by British Sulphur in May-2004. The
GM highlighted the growth of region’s environmental
awareness.
- Mr. Maitham Al Oraibi presented a paper on integrated
Safety, Health and Environment system in the SABIC Environment
Committee meeting on 27th March 2004.
- POM, SPRE and PE attended a seminar on Air Quality in
Bahrain in the month of May 2004.
- The 6th International Conference and Exhibition on Chemistry
in Industry was held at the Gulf International Convention
Center from 27.09.2004 to 29.09.2004, under the patronage
of His Excellency Dr. Hassan Abdullah Fakhro, Minister of
Industry, Kingdom of Bahrain. On behalf of the General Manager,
Dr. Mustafa Al-Sayed, the Technical Services Manager, Mr.
Yousif Abdulla Yousif, delivered a plenary lecture entitled:
“Opportunities for Expansion of the Gas-Based Petrochemical
Industry in Bahrain”. The technical programme featured
more than 120 papers covering a wide range of industrial
areas, including a full session on “Water and Environment”.
Members of the subcommittee attended the lectures and viewed
the exhibition.
- GPIC launched a BD 5000, “Ministry of Education
&GPIC Environmental fund for supporting the Environmental
research. Under this program 21 research programs will be
funded to aid Environmental awareness and resource conservation,
within secondary schools. There were 84 project entries
of which 21 were selected. The program will conclude by
the end of academic year 2004-2005.
- Members of Parliament visited GPIC complex on 10th may.
They praised GPIC’s safety records and efforts in
training Bahrainis and company’s efforts in conserving
environment.
- On 12th June the tenth batch of See-Brims (30,000 numbers)
was released to the sea, which were harvested in GPIC’s
fish farm.
- A fresh batch of 30,000 Sea Brims was placed in GPIC
Fish Farm in the month of November-2004.
- There will be a permanent section in the report to the
Board of Directors covering the environmental activities
and incidents related to the complex.
- A team of Chinese ministers visited GPIC in the last
week of November. The team praised the healthy and safe
environment in the company and planted a tree. GPIC’s
efforts to promote Environment were praised by the team.
- By the year 2004 there are 43 green areas developed in
side and around the complex. The number of trees planted
in and around the complex totalled 4,180.
- As per the plan to have lectures on Environmental topics
in GPIC, Dr. Waleed Zubari from Arabian Gulf University
gave a lecture on “Management and Sustainability of
ground water resources in Bahrain”.
- GPIC got the prestigious accreditation for OHSAS 18001
in the year 2004.
- The Environment Management System is followed all over
the complex and audited internally on a regular basis. External
auditors did two assessments from Lloyds and they were successfully
completed with minor observations and the recommendations
are being followed up.
- As a part of GPIC’s commitment to promote Environmental
awareness and share the philosophy with other industries,
meeting was held with representatives of other companies
in GPIC in the month of June-2004.
