Later His Highness and the other guests made a tour that included visiting the Green Oasis and Company’s plants where they were briefed about operations and productivity of the Company’s facilities. The event started with HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa unveiling the commemorative plaque marking the launch of the Plants and Medical Herbal Garden. On this occasion, His Highness planted a tree at the new Garden.

Later, Mr. Abdul Rahman Jawahery delivered a speech in which he welcomed the event’s patron HH SHaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the guests. He thanked His Highness for kindly attending this event which reflected His Highness’ concern with environmental policies and programmes designed to provide a clean environment in the Kingdom. In his speech, Mr. Jawahery said GPIC fully realizes the significance of protecting the environment in the Kingdom of Bahrain and that is why it always seeks to comply with environmental regulations. The Company has won for the second successive time the His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s Award for the best environmental garden in companies and industries. He considered this Award as evidence of the Company’s good reputation and commitment to preserve the environment. The Company has in place policies aimed at protecting the health and safety of the employees and local population in the Complex’ neighbouring areas.

He further said that the Company firmly believes that it is an inseparable part of the local community and has decided to effectively contribute to serving this community on various environmental, charitable or humanitarian levels. He noted that this new environmental project was part of a series of environmental schemes concerned with various environmental components at the sea, land and air. He stressed that this Garden was a tangible example of the Company’s keen interest to protect the plants, trees and herbs that have high nutritious and medical values, especially the Bahraini plants, some of which are threatened with extinction in their natural habitat.
He added what makes us even more proud is that this environmental project is supervised voluntarily by a number of GPIC employees who form together a working committee for overseeing the project.

Concluding, he expressed his thanks to HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa and all the officials in the Kingdom in charge of protecting wildlife. He stressed the great importance of the commitment by everyone to protect various environmental aspects in Bahrain.

Afterwards, His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the guests toured the Garden and were briefed on the most important plants and medical herbs and how to maintain them. This was followed by a visit to the Charity Fish Farm where the prominent guest and his party released a number of the rare sea-breams into the sea. The fish was the product of the Company’s own Fish Farm at the Complex.

The GPIC Fish Farm is designed to enrich marine life and to increase fish stocks in the Kingdom and to show the community that the environment around the Complex is both clean and hygienic.

This was followed by a visit to the Bird Sanctuary which was launched by His Highness on 25th June, 2002 and was considered as one of the several environmental projects in the Complex. It plays host to flamingoes and other migrant birds that stay for most of the year in the shallow coastal areas and feed on crustaceans available at the site.
At the end of the visit, HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa said he was pleased with the visit to GPIC to have a close look at its leading environmental projects and schemes which constituted part of the Company’s clear policy of complying with the laws and legislation introduced by Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife. Today’s launch of the Plants and Medical herbal Garden, he continued, is further evidence of such commitment. As continuously demonstrated by the Company, it is confirmed once again that industrial development is not against the safety of the surrounding environment if international environmental laws and standards are complied with. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Oil Minister and GPIC Chairman for the continuous support for the Company’s environmental projects and programmes. He also thanked the GPIC management for the warm welcome and hospitality.

The event was attended by HE Dr. Ismail Al Madani, PCPMREW Vice President and Director General of Environmental Protection and Wildlife, and a number of senior officials in the Kingdom.
