Al-Jubail Marine Wildlife Sanctuary

East cost of Saudi Arabia, North of Al Jubail industrial town.

Area:
2,300 km2

Type:
Nature Reserve, Marine Sanctuary

Year of establishment:
1993 Nature Reserve

Objective:
Protect the coastal habitat and reintroduce the mangrove trees in the area.

Management:
National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD)

Geographical aspects:
The sanctuary consists of two shallow gulfs Dawhat al-wafi and Dawhat al-muslamiyah; a coastal strech between Abu-Ali and Raas al-zoor; five coral islands al-harkosi, al-karan, al-kareen, al-jana and al-jareed.

Flora:
A diversity of flora species in the different habitats.

Fauna:
A diversity of fauna species in the different habitats e.g. 260 bird species which represent more than 70% of the birds found in the Gulf Region. Some of the islands are important breeding site for green turtle, and various species of terns.
