2,369 km2

Type:
Special Natural Reserve, Resource Use Reserve and Scientific Reserve.


Year of establishment:
1988

Objective:
To protect the biological diversity and habitat of the area. Protection and reintroduction of endangered species. Research, education, tourism and recreation.

Management:
National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD)

Geographical aspects:
The reserve is part of Tuwaiq Mountains, which rises to 1000 km from northwest to southeast and is 180 km south of Riyadh. There are many valley's running from west to east. Small sand patches are present on the southwest side of the reserve.

Flora:
Scarce vegetation, few trees and shrubs except for the areas that is not accessible to grazing due to the rugged terrain.

Fauna:
Capra ibex is present in the reserve in fairly good numbers in their natural habitat. Other animals present in the area like Procavia capensis, Felis sylvestris, Vulpes vulpes, and Canis lupus. Due to hunting, some animals were extinct from the area like Hyaena hyaena and Gazella gazella.
