Geographical aspects:
A shallow, relatively well-sheltered bay, part of the
larger Kuwait Bay system, with extensive inter-tidal
mudflats (c.2,250 ha) reportedly the most productive
mudflats in Kuwait. The Bay was badly affected by oil
pollution during Gulf War and was the most heavily polluted
stretch of coastline in the country.
Flora:
Fauna:
Important staging and wintering area for migratory waterfowl,
and at least 70 bird species have been reported, in
addition an important nursery area for economically
valuable shrimps. The crab Cleistostoma kuwaitense is
one of the threatened endemic wildlife.
